Global overview. Country support varies.

Check again before buying: Pricing, plans, country support, and promotions can change.

A point-of-sale system records what you sell and how a customer pays. Depending on the system, it can also track stock, customer details, staff access, online orders, and several shop locations.

The right POS depends on where your shop operates, how you take payments, how complicated your stock is, whether you sell online, and how many locations you run. A good choice for one shop may be impractical for another.

This guide compares five different fits. It does not put the products into a universal order.

Research status: Vendor research only. Research based on official vendor information checked on 19 August 2026. ShopsInto has not yet tested these systems directly. Pricing, plans, payments, hardware, and country availability can change. No paid or affiliate links are active on this page.

Check country support before comparing features

Important country warning: POS software, integrated payments, official hardware, support, and local tax suitability are separate questions. A POS app may technically work in a country while its built-in payments or official hardware do not.

Start with payments and hardware, not the longest feature list. Check that the provider can open an account for your business, process the payment methods your customers use, supply or support suitable hardware, and handle the currency and local setup you need.

Quick shortlist by shop need

Prices below keep the currency, source market, and billing basis published by each vendor. They were checked on 19 August 2026 and should not be compared as if they all came from the same country.

Product Best fit Price context Main strength Key limitation

Shopify POS

Best fit Shops already using or planning to use Shopify ecommerce Price context POS Lite is included with Shopify plans; US POS Pro price was USD 89 per month, per location Main strength Official documentation confirms shared products, orders, customers, and location inventory Key limitation A Shopify plan is required, and advanced tools can depend on POS Pro or apps. Integrated payments and Shopify readers are country-dependent; an external terminal is recorded separately, not natively integrated.

Square

Best fit A straightforward small-shop setup in an officially supported Square market Price context US Free was USD 0 per month per location plus processing; Plus was USD 49 per month per location; Premium was custom-priced Main strength Square documents connected POS, customer, inventory, staff, and online tools Key limitation Payment processing is limited to eight published countries, and hardware is approved for its intended country. Pakistan and Malaysia are outside the processing list.

Lightspeed Retail X-Series

Best fit Shops with detailed stock or several locations Price context US Basic, Core, and Plus were USD 89, USD 149, and USD 289 per month; one outlet and register were shown Main strength Official information confirms purchasing, supplier, count, transfer, multi-location, and reporting tools Key limitation Extra outlet/register pricing and some contract costs require verification. Software, Lightspeed Payments, hardware, and fiscal coverage have different market footprints.

Loyverse

Best fit Shops looking for a low-cost, software-first starting point Price context US presentation: core USD 0; history USD 5, Employee Management USD 25, and Advanced Inventory USD 25 per store per month Main strength The free core includes essential inventory, loyalty, and multi-store tools Key limitation Deeper inventory, staff controls, and more than 31 days of sales history are paid add-ons. Card integration depends on a supported payment partner; other terminals require manual amount entry.

Odoo POS

Best fit Shops that want POS connected to wider business operations Price context US website annual display: One App Free USD 0; Standard USD 24.90 and Custom USD 49 per user per month Main strength Odoo documents links with inventory, purchasing, accounting, customer accounts, ecommerce, and staff rights Key limitation Useful breadth can require substantial setup across several apps. Payment terminals, providers, IoT needs, hardware, support, and local fit vary by market.

Shopify POS: best fit for Shopify-connected selling

Why it is on the shortlist

Shopify POS has a clear role for a shop that already sells online with Shopify or plans to do so. Official documentation says its online and in-store setup shares products, orders, customers, and inventory. Inventory can be tracked by location.

Good fit for: a retailer that wants its Shopify store and physical checkout in the same system, especially in a country where Shopify Payments for POS and supported readers are available.

What official information confirms: checkout, cash and manual payment recording, barcodes, variants, basic inventory, location stock, customer profiles, sales reporting, and online/in-store synchronization. POS roles and some advanced retail workflows depend on the plan.

Important limitations: Shopify POS is not universally integrated. Loyalty can depend on apps, some deeper inventory work is plan-dependent, and POS Pro adds a per-location cost. ShopsInto has not yet verified synchronization, returns, reports, or offline recovery in a real shop.

Country, payment, and hardware note: Shopify publishes a specific list of countries for integrated in-person Shopify Payments. Where supported readers are unavailable, a shop can use a separate processor and external terminal, then mark the order as paid with a custom payment type. The external terminal processes the payment separately; this is not native card integration and Shopify does not receive the same transaction detail.

Pricing note: in the US pricing scope checked on 19 August 2026, POS Lite was included with Shopify subscription plans and POS Pro was USD 89 per month, per location. The Shopify subscription, apps, hardware, and payment processing can add to the total.

Carefully verify or avoid if: Shopify Payments and readers are not supported in your country, you do not want a Shopify subscription, or your shop needs specialized stock and purchasing workflows that have not been confirmed for your plan.

Research status: Official vendor research only. ShopsInto has not tested Shopify POS directly.

Square: best fit for a simple setup in a supported market

Why it is on the shortlist

Square combines checkout with customer records, inventory, staff tools, and an online store. Its official country boundary is also unusually clear, which makes it easier to rule the product in or out before spending time on setup.

Good fit for: a small retailer in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, or Spain that wants one connected Square setup and can confirm the local plan and hardware.

What official information confirms: basic checkout and inventory, customer profiles, multiple locations, returns, mobile POS, and Square Online synchronization. Purchase orders, richer inventory, loyalty, staff permissions, time tracking, and deeper reports depend on the plan or configuration.

Important limitations: an account must process card payments in the country where it was activated. Hardware is approved for its intended country. Offline card acceptance has device, eligibility, limit, and reconnection rules, so it should not be treated as guaranteed payment.

Country, payment, and hardware note: Square officially lists card processing in eight countries: the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, and Spain. Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, and other countries are outside that list. This makes Square unsuitable as a normal integrated-payment choice for a Pakistan or Malaysia shop.

Pricing note: in the US packaging checked on 19 August 2026, Free was USD 0 per month per location plus processing, Plus was USD 49 per month per location, and Premium used custom pricing. The retail pricing page offered a 30-day trial for paid tiers. Hardware and processing remain separate costs, and prices in other Square countries are different.

Carefully verify or avoid if: your business is outside a published Square processing country, you need to move hardware between countries, or the features you need sit in a paid plan.

Research status: Official vendor research only. ShopsInto has not tested Square directly.

Official sources: Square for Retail, US retail pricing, processing-country guidance, and Square Online plans.

Lightspeed Retail X-Series: best fit for detailed stock and several locations

Why it is on the shortlist

Lightspeed Retail X-Series has the clearest documented role here for an inventory-led retailer. Its official material covers variants, suppliers, purchase orders, stock counts, transfers, multiple locations, and plan-dependent forecasting and reports.

Good fit for: a retailer with more demanding purchasing and stock work, or one that needs to coordinate inventory across outlets and can budget for setup and paid software.

What official information confirms: barcode and variant support, basic and multi-location inventory, suppliers, purchase orders, counts, transfers, returns, customer profiles, reporting, and a mobile scanner/POS app. Ecommerce, loyalty, custom staff roles, API access, and advanced insights vary by plan.

Important limitations: X-Series software, Lightspeed Payments, official hardware, and local fiscal support do not share one worldwide footprint. Offline selling is limited, and offline card behavior depends on the payment setup. Extra outlet and register amounts were not clear in the accepted evidence.

Country, payment, and hardware note: verify X-Series—not another Lightspeed product—for your country. Then separately confirm Lightspeed Payments eligibility, compatible hardware, local support, and currency or fiscal requirements. Evidence for Pakistan and Malaysia was not sufficient to confirm these points.

Pricing note: the US X-Series page checked on 19 August 2026 showed Basic at USD 89, Core at USD 149, and Plus at USD 289 per month, with one outlet and one register shown. Plans are charged per outlet, extra registers are billed separately, and multi-location pricing may require a sales discussion. The annual interface advertised a term-dependent saving, so a discounted amount should not be treated as the standard monthly price.

Carefully verify or avoid if: you want a very simple low-cost setup, cannot confirm local payment and hardware support, or do not yet know the full outlet, register, onboarding, and contract cost.

Research status: Official vendor research only. ShopsInto has not tested Lightspeed Retail X-Series directly.

Official sources: Lightspeed Retail, US X-Series pricing, outlet and register billing, and offline selling.

Loyverse: best fit for a low-cost software starting point

Why it is on the shortlist

Loyverse separates a useful free core from optional paid back-office tools. That makes its starting scope easier to understand than a package where every feature is bundled into one quote.

Good fit for: a small shop that wants mobile checkout, essential inventory, customer profiles, loyalty, and multi-store tools, and is willing to verify its local card terminal separately.

What official information confirms: checkout, cash and manual payment recording, barcodes, variants, basic inventory, low-stock tools, customer profiles, loyalty, returns, and mobile apps. Advanced Inventory adds suppliers, purchase orders, stock counts, transfers, production, inventory history, and valuation. Employee Management adds staff access, time cards, and employee sales information.

Important limitations: the free core keeps sales analytics to the latest 31 days. Advanced stock work, employee controls, and unlimited sales history are paid. Ecommerce and accounting connections depend on third-party integrations rather than a confirmed native storefront and accounting package.

Country, payment, and hardware note: Loyverse does not process cards itself. It connects to selected payment providers in selected countries. If a provider is not integrated, staff must enter the amount on the terminal and record that payment in Loyverse. The evidence did not establish an integrated provider for Pakistan or Malaysia. Compatible device and local support details also need checking.

Pricing note: in the US presentation checked on 19 August 2026, the core was USD 0. Unlimited sales history was USD 5 per month or USD 50 per year per store. Employee Management and Advanced Inventory were each USD 25 per month or USD 250 per year per store. Add-ons had a 14-day trial. Payment processing and hardware are separate and market-specific.

Carefully verify or avoid if: you need confirmed native ecommerce, a particular integrated payment provider, local support, or advanced stock and staff tools without add-on fees.

Research status: Official vendor research only. ShopsInto has not tested Loyverse directly.

Official sources: Loyverse features, US pricing, Advanced Inventory, and payment systems.

Odoo POS: best fit for a connected business system

Why it is on the shortlist

Odoo POS sits inside a wider collection of business apps. Official documentation connects it with Inventory, Purchase, Accounting, customer accounts, ecommerce, employees, and multi-company tools. That breadth gives it a different role from a simple card-reader app.

Good fit for: a shop that wants POS tied to wider purchasing, stock, accounting, ecommerce, or customer-credit work and is prepared to plan the implementation.

What official information confirms: checkout, cash and manual payments, products and variants, barcodes, returns, customers, loyalty, customer deposits and credit, tiered employee rights, and sales and inventory reports. Inventory and Purchase can add supplier, warehouse, count, and transfer work. The paid all-app plans include ecommerce and Accounting.

Important limitations: Odoo is not a plug-and-play conclusion. A useful setup may span several apps, permissions, local accounting settings, payment providers, compatible hardware, and possibly an IoT system. Offline software operation has browser and cached-data limits, while offline cards depend on the terminal and provider.

Country, payment, and hardware note: terminal integrations and provider support vary by country. Local support, hardware, currency, and fiscal suitability must be checked separately. The accepted evidence did not verify these points for Pakistan or Malaysia.

Pricing note: on the US website annual display checked on 19 August 2026, One App Free was USD 0 for one app and unlimited users on Odoo Online. Standard was displayed at a term-dependent USD 24.90 per user per month and Custom at USD 49 per user per month. Standard includes all apps on Odoo Online; Custom adds choices including Odoo.sh or on-premise, plus Studio, multi-company, and the external API. Implementation, partner work, hosting choices, custom modules, hardware, and payment fees can raise the full cost.

Carefully verify or avoid if: you want minimal configuration, cannot budget for implementation, or need a payment terminal and local fiscal setup that has not been confirmed for your market.

Research status: Official vendor research only. ShopsInto has not tested Odoo POS directly.

Official sources: Odoo POS, Odoo pricing, Odoo 19 POS workflow, and payment terminals.

Will this POS work in your country?

Every buyer needs to verify the market where the shop operates. Software availability does not guarantee integrated payments. Integrated payments do not guarantee official hardware. Product availability does not establish local currency, tax, or fiscal suitability, and support may differ by country.

Pakistan and Malaysia are useful evidence-backed examples of why these checks must stay separate:

  • Square: its official card-processing list does not include Pakistan or Malaysia. It is not a normal integrated-payment option for a shop in either country.
  • Shopify POS: software use with a separately processed external payment may be possible. Shopify Payments for POS and Shopify first-party hardware are not supported in the accepted country matrix for Pakistan or Malaysia. An external terminal must process the payment separately before staff mark the order as paid.
  • Lightspeed Retail X-Series: local software, payments, hardware, support, currency, and fiscal fit still require official verification in both countries.
  • Loyverse: the evidence did not establish an integrated payment provider, first-party hardware, local support, or fiscal suitability for either country.
  • Odoo POS: technical software use is not enough to establish local terminals, first-party hardware, support, or fiscal suitability. Those points remain unverified.

This article does not recommend a local provider or make a tax or legal conclusion. A global POS shortlist is not a substitute for local market research.

How to choose a POS for your shop

Work through these questions before requesting a demo or buying hardware:

  • Does it support your country? Check account registration, not just whether the app downloads.
  • Can you accept the payments your customers use? Confirm the provider, terminal, settlement account, and payment methods.
  • Can you obtain suitable hardware? Check official hardware first, then documented compatibility for scanners, printers, cash drawers, and terminals.
  • How complicated is your stock? A small catalogue may need basic counts and low-stock warnings. A larger shop may need variants, suppliers, purchase orders, transfers, and stock counts.
  • Do you sell online and in the shop? Ask exactly which products, orders, customers, and stock quantities synchronize.
  • Do you run several locations? Check whether prices are per location, outlet, register, store, or user—and how stock moves between locations.
  • What happens without internet? Separate offline checkout from offline card payments. Ask what can fail and what happens after reconnecting.
  • What is the full cost? Add software, users, locations, registers, hardware, payment processing, apps, onboarding, support, and contract terms.
  • Can your staff use it? A long feature list does not show whether checkout, returns, stock counts, and end-of-day work are understandable.

What ShopsInto still needs to test

Official documentation can confirm that a feature is offered. It cannot show how well it works in a particular shop. Future hands-on work should cover:

  • account and hardware setup
  • normal checkout and cash handling
  • offline behavior, reconnecting, and recovery
  • purchasing, receiving, stock counts, and transfers
  • returns and exchanges
  • staff accounts and permissions
  • sales, staff, and inventory report quality
  • exports and accounting handoff
  • online and in-store synchronization
  • integrated and external payment reconciliation
  • support access and response quality

Until that work is complete, these are fit-based research directions rather than strong performance recommendations.

Methodology and disclosure

This article follows the ShopsInto comparison methodology: material product claims come from official vendor pages, help centers, developer documentation, or legal terms, and time-sensitive facts carry a checked date. Vendor documentation can confirm that the vendor offers a feature; it cannot prove ease, reliability, or comparative performance.

See the ShopsInto commercial disclosure for how future paid links would be handled. No paid links are active on this page, and commercial relationships do not influence the shortlist.
